Terrain height maps come in a variety of sizes; namely: 129x129; 257x257; 513x513; 1025x1025; 2049x2049; and, 4097x4097. The best detail is attained by using terrain sizes of from 1025 to 4097. We suggest that the beginner start generating landscapes by using the smaller terrains in order to become familiar with the process. With the registered version of Terragen™, you will have the ability create and render larger images. Just hover your mouse over the thumbnail below; click, and the zipped file will be downloaded to the place of your choice.

The files below are among our favorites. Many images in the Gallery have been produced using them. Keep an eye on this page as from time to time we will be adding new terrains as they become available! The latest downloads are at the bottom of the list.

Be sure to see the latest: 'Terragen 2' at Planetside!

This is a 4097 x 4097 terrain DEM file we downloaded a few years ago from Christian Couette; aka christianfly at his site: Christian Fly on the Web. The terrain is called 'Navajo Lake'. This was created from a satellite photo over east-central Utah and is filled with many detailed landforms. Us; and many others have created many beautiful landscape images from this height map. Give it a try; We're sure you won't be disappointed.

This is a 4097 x 4097 terrain DEM file that we also downloaded a few years ago from Christian Fly on the Web called 'Navajo Point'. It is in the same region as the above terrain and is also loaded with excellent points of view.

This is a 2049 x 2049 terrain created by Lutz Backer; aka 'LutzB', a very talented Terragen artist from Germany. Lutz recommends that the terrain height be 'stretched' in TerraFormer2 to more accurately replicate the landscapes he has created with this terrain. You must visit Lutz's gallery on Renderosity.

This is a 1025 x 1025 terrain created by Lutz Backer.

This is a 513 x 513 terrain created in Terragen by Bob Choronzuk; aka 'choronr', artist and author of this web site. Two good pictures were created with this terrain; namely, 'Fault Line' and 'Snow on the Fault'. You can see these pictures in choronr's gallery on Renderosity; and, in the 'imagiNature' Gallery.

This is a combination of two 4097 x 4097 DEM terrains; namely: Moonlight Peak CA and Mt. St. Helens that was created by Bob Choronzuk; aka 'choronr', artist and author of this web site. We created a picture from this terrain called 'The Sleeper' which you can see in the author's gallery at Renderosity. A second version of the picture was created as a teamwork by choronr and Jay Testerman; aka Buzzzzz - one of the top artists in the DeviantArt Terragen gallery.

This 2049 x 2049 terrain was created by John Robertson; aka 'WeeLaddie' an accomplished digital artist. I believe this terrain was created in World Machine. You can see John's gallery on Renderosity.

This is a combination of two 2049 x 2049 terrains created by the author - one by Evi Moechel; aka 'Zazie' called 'Bryce4'; and, one by Jens; aka 'Joshus_Hund' called 'Emotional'. The combination was stretched by 133% and changed to a 30 point spacing. A recent image created from this terrain called 'Sedona Sunset' can be found at the author's gallery.

This terrain is similar to the one above except a third terrain was added by the author. A recent image created from this terrain called 'Sedona Sunset' that can be found at the author's gallery.

This is another 2049 x 2049 terrain called 'Big Ben' created by John Robertson; aka 'WeeLaddie'. I believe this terrain was also created in World Machine. You can see John's works in his gallery on Renderosity.

This is a 2049 x 2049 terrain called 'Ashkelon' created by Mark Edwards; aka 'Markal'. You'll find this a very unusual terrain with landforms that look like man-made structures. You can see some of Mark's works in his galley on Renderosity.

These Terragen 2 files will only remain here temporarily for a test and will be removed shortly. The large icon contains a DEM terrain file for the 'Navajo Point' terrain. The smaller icon contains three image map shaders for surface textures; and, the .tgd world file.

Both, the above; and, this icon contain are all that is needed for the image: 'Navajo Spirits'.

This is a 4097 x 4097 DEM file of 'Moonlight Peak, CA'. If you're looking for some of those nice rolling hills of southern California, this is the terrain for you.
